Coach
Brief info

Coach Octavian Mathis is one of the wrestling coaches at Duncan MMA, working with both our elementary and middle/high school wrestling programs. With a strong competitive background and a passion for developing young athletes, he focuses on helping students build solid fundamentals, mental toughness, and confidence on the mat.

Octavian wrestled for four years at the high school level in South Jersey, where he built an impressive competitive record. During that time he earned multiple local tournament championships and became a 2-time District Champion and 2-time District placer. He also achieved success at the regional level as a Regional Champion and 2-time Regional placer, and went on to place at the state level as well. After high school, he continued competing by joining the U.S. Air Force Wrestling Team for a season, gaining valuable experience training alongside high-level athletes.

In addition to his wrestling background, Octavian is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blue Belt and an active BJJ competitor. His experience in both wrestling and submission grappling allows him to teach athletes how to blend strong takedowns, positional control, and grappling awareness across multiple disciplines.

As a coach, Octavian emphasizes work ethic, discipline, and technical precision. He is dedicated to helping young wrestlers develop the skills and mindset needed to compete, while also building the character and resilience that wrestling teaches both on and off the mat.
